How is that linked to the past?

Fear stifles creativity. In the times of Florence the Medici family was a great patron of the arts. Along comes a catholic priest who employs the young men of the church as spies and fear stifles creativity. Savonarola decided that he backed by God had the right to censure the ways that the people of the city were able to express themselves through art. No longer was nudity or pagan themes allowable. Not only that but nothing that wasn't inherently spiritual was allowed.

Fear is also the reason that people have stopped partaking in the hitchhiking means of travel. In this case it isn't that one person decided to push their agenda on the group but instead it was group think spurred on by the media. People thought, "hmmm isn't that dangerous, hitchhiking..." and so the idea has been perpetuated. And the roads are now free for cars to roam free and no longer to the ultimate carpoolers take part.
